What Makes a Good Woodworking Sanding Disc?

Not all sanding discs are created equal for wood. Key qualities to look for:

  • Consistent grit distribution: Uneven abrasive coating leaves inconsistent scratch patterns that show under finish.
  • Anti-loading coating: Wood — especially softwoods and resinous species like pine — clogs abrasives quickly. A stearate (anti-loading) coating on the disc dramatically extends life on wood.
  • Durable backing: Wood sanding often involves more lateral pressure than automotive work. A strong paper or film backing prevents tearing.
