The short answer: yes, it matters quite a bit. This guide explains the difference, the benefits of dust extraction, and how to match your disc to your sander.


Solid (Non-Vacuum) Sanding Discs

Solid discs have no holes. They cover the entire backing pad surface with abrasive, which means maximum cutting area for a given disc size. Dust generated during sanding has nowhere to go except outward from the disc edge or into the air.

When to Use Solid Discs

  • Your sander has no dust port or vacuum connection
  • You're working outdoors where dust dispersal isn't a concern
  • You need maximum abrasive coverage on the surface
  • You're doing very short sanding tasks where dust buildup isn't an issue

Vacuum (Dust Extraction) Sanding Discs

Vacuum discs have holes punched through the abrasive layer that align with ports on the backing pad. When connected to a sander with a dust port (or a shop vacuum via a hose adapter), suction pulls dust up through the holes and into a collection bag or vacuum. The result: a cleaner work surface, longer disc life, and dramatically less airborne dust.

Benefits of Dust Extraction

  • Longer disc life: Dust loading (clogging) is one of the primary reasons discs wear out prematurely. Extracting dust as it's generated keeps the abrasive cutting cleanly for much longer.
  • Better finish quality: A clean surface means you can see what you're doing. Dust buildup under the disc can cause uneven sanding and scratches.
  • Healthier work environment: Fine abrasive dust — especially from paint, primer, or MDF — is a serious respiratory hazard. Dust extraction at the source is far more effective than relying on a respirator alone.
  • Faster work: Less time stopping to wipe down the surface or blow off dust means more time sanding.

Hole Pattern Guide: 5-Hole, 6-Hole, 8-Hole

The number and placement of holes must match your sander's backing pad pattern. Using a disc with a different hole pattern than your pad will block some extraction ports, reducing dust collection efficiency — or worse, the holes won't align at all.

5-Hole Discs

Common on many mid-range 5" random orbital sanders. Five holes are arranged in a ring pattern around the center of the disc.

6-Hole Discs

Standard on most 6" random orbital sanders. Six holes provide good dust extraction coverage across the larger disc surface.

8-Hole Discs

Found on 8" sanders and some professional-grade 5" and 6" sanders with higher-density extraction patterns. Eight holes provide superior dust removal across the full disc surface.


How to Check Your Sander's Hole Pattern

The easiest way to confirm your sander's hole pattern is to:

  1. Remove any disc currently on the sander.
  2. Look at the backing pad face — count the holes and note their arrangement.
  3. Check your sander's manual or manufacturer website for the recommended disc specification.
  4. Match that pattern when ordering discs.

Can I Use Solid Discs on a Sander with a Dust Port?

Yes — solid discs will work on any sander, but you'll lose all dust extraction capability. The suction from the sander's dust port will simply be blocked by the solid disc. For occasional use or when you've run out of vacuum discs, it's fine. For regular use, vacuum discs are worth it.
